On Creating a Fire Break
Could you and I help in creating some kind of metaphysical, energetic Fire Break as a contribution to dousing the wildfires sweeping Europe, some of the USA and some parts of the UK too? Subject of this morning's musing, not least because the horse charity I support is directly being exposed to the wildfires in Oregon.
Fire needs fuel. Fire Breaks deprive it of anything bar 'hot air'. It dies.
May be I could:
- stop fueling fires of doom and fear when conversing
- better appreciate the elements and natural cycles of the earth
- stop being consumed like tinder by the plethora of YouTube videos intent on convincing me that everything in my body, society, the universe has inflammation at its core
- get to understand and respect fire a little better...
The latter thought led to considering that if I'm appreciating fire, I'm no longer getting hot and bothered about it, or igniting flames of blame and shame about climate change, those committing arson etc.
That doesn't mean being blind or ignoring the destruction, death or dangers overheated earth and wildfires pose. Exactly the opposite. Looking at fire with a cool head and warm heart opens up a space for calm, allaying fear and even allowing tears of compassion to hit the soil.
Here's my list as to what fire can prompt after giving it some TLC
- acting entirely in the present moment!
- prefaces new growth
- brings people together in face of danger
- engender remarkable acts of kindness and bravery
- blur national boundaries as it rages in many countries simultaneously
- containment becomes highlighted
- humbles mankind
- hones senses - particularly smell
- challenges forcibly what's important about stuff
- in worst cases forces re-evaluating what home means
- diverts attention from screens to the earth
- makes space
Fire-fighters obviously and practically have to fight to save lives and put out the fires. There are some very particular verbs concerned with quelling or extinguishing them. They seem to me to be pertinent in the wider context of world 'hot spots'and fear fueling media:
- contain
- douse
- dampen
- subdue
- clear
- drop (water)
- calm
Being a 'damp squib', containing my anger or rage etc and subduing fears sound rather boring, ineffectual and possibly too personal... But if that in some energetic way clears the smallest of spaces to any of my kin - human and more than human - in the danger zones, it's worthwhile.
