Dilemma

It’s interesting to see how certain words can’t be ‘noun-ed’. Returning from the new-but-becoming habitual walk to Old Willow and back, the word ‘dilemma’ arrived. I can dither, vacillate and deliberate but can’t go ‘a-dilemma-ing’!

A dilemma must be owned. I ‘have’ a dilemma. Darn nouns – they ‘thing’ the thing which makes the word the thing (which it isn’t)...

What WAS the dilemma? Ah! It was whether to delete or keep my empty bear blog since coding is not in my verbing vocabulary. Both felt undesirable. Nevertheless, musing on the word ‘dilemma’ prompted writing. And blogging here is now happening.

p.s. DILEMMA: word-smithing note drawing on Etymonline and Wikipedia: Loosely, "choice between two undesirable alternatives," from 1580s. Late Latin ‘di’ (twice) and ‘lemma’ (anything received or taken). Fun new learning – there’s such a ‘thing’ as a trilemma, presumably for those who want to sit on three horns rather than two!
